an affinity with dolphins & Poem #18

I have always felt an affinity with dolphins. Visiting the Florida Keys, I saw a few and heard stories of their sensitivity. Therefore, when I ran across this news article yesterday on Digg, it made me smile.

Thousands of dolphins block Somali pirates – China Daily, 4/14/09 (per China Radio International)

Trying to attack Chinese merchant ships passing through the Gulf of Aden off the Somali coast, the pirates were halted.  Thousands of dolphins suddenly leaped out of the water between the Somali and the Chinese, as if protecting the Chinese ships.

“The pirates could only lament their littleness before the vast number of dolphins.” They gave up and left.

Such is the context for Poem #18

how magnificent the dolphins, how many their numbers
but size and quantity counted little
compared to their psychic link with those in distress
